WINDOWS VISTA - NAS, VMWARE & VPN

May 12, 2007 · Filed Under General

This blog is to detail my first months experience with Vista.  While it hasn’t been a total success, I’ve managed to get most of my issues worked out.  The biggest issue I initially experienced was with the Network Attached Storage (NAS).  Every time I would try to connect to the NAS box I would get a ‘A device attached to the system is not functioning’ error message.  Even with the help of various sites such as http://www.tweakvista.com/article39001.aspx , nothing appeared to work.  Eventually the issue was solved with a call to microsoft.  Apparently there is a (not publically available) hotfix that will fix the particular issue I was having.  If anyone is interested, the hotfix is KB933664.

My issues with connecting to VPN through the Cisco VPN client were solved with the newest 5.0.00.0340 client.  I was able to work with the previous beta, however it was hit and miss how often it would actually connect.

VMWare Server runs like a dog.  It also does not work on wireless, for anyone who is trying to use a laptop for it (Yeah, I know you’re wondering why anyone would do that).  Apparently it needs a hard wired connection and about a 5 minute boot time.  :)

Other issues and applications I had were resolved with setting those applications to the XP compatibility mode.   So, for the most part I think all my Vista Issues are resolved.  I’ll do a followup post if I run across anything else.
